Is there anyway out of finical mess without braking up big banks?

Or turning Federal Government into small loan default lender.
There were plenty of ways to at least have prevented the situation from getting as dire as it is right now.
First of all, people that could only afford...say...half their mortgage payment, banks were declining any efforts from home owners to try to remain in their home, and defaulted them anyway. Even if HALF the money was being circulated, it wouldn't have caused this type of problem.
So, then the fat guys that runs the bank rips people from their homes and go running off to the government for bailout after bailout, for money they can use on trips to Fiji, manicures, pedicures, massages and fine dining. Has any of that money been circulated back into the economy??? Nope!
Same thing goes for the auto industry. It's a trickle effect. If people can't get loans, they can't buy cars! I don't care how "green" they promise to make these cars. For the past 5 to 6 years, dealerships haven't been able to GIVE a new car/truck away.

Citi still feels sting of bad loans
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Citigroup's unbroken crusade to return to its former glory as a financial superhuman may have to wait just a bit longer.
On Thursday, the companions reported a slim profit of just $101 million as accept problems, particularly within its consumer-related businesses, weighed down its third-abode results.
But after taking into account the recent conversion of part of the management's preferred stake in the company into common cattle, the New York-based bank reported a breakdown of 27 cents a share.
As one of the harder hit banks in the turning-point, Citigroup has been on a campaign to get back to sustained profitability, prospering so far as to split the company into two divisions and selling off several of its many differing businesses in recent months.
Earlier this year, there were signs it was making onwards. In both April and July, the company stunned Fortification Street by reporting surprise profits.
